Seimas allows EU nationals to take part in the activities of Lithuanian political parties

Implementing the requirement entrenched in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (EU) to ensure that nationals who are not citizens of a country have the right to stand as candidates in municipal elections as well as elections to the European Parliament under the same conditions as citizens of the country, the Seimas adopted the amendments to the preamble of the Law on Political Parties (draft No. XIIP-875(4). The currently valid law establishes that citizens of the Republic of Lithuania have the right to freely assemble into political parties, participate in their activities and to withdraw from them. The law was supplemented with the provision regulating that this right, except for the establishment of political parties, is also available to nationals of other European Union Member States who permanently reside in the Republic of Lithuania and who have lived continuously in the Republic of Lithuania for the last 5 years, and who are not members of parties or political organisations of other countries. Like others, they may only be members of one political party registered in the Republic of Lithuania.
